The Integrated Amplifier was just getting into it’s stride after the dominance of the pre/power combo, when the Home Theatre boom hit, and like most stereo amplifiers, they went out of favour with the buying public and in their place was the vastly inferior (sonically) home theatre amp. Well, they are making something of a comeback!
The Onkyo A-9000R is a very good example architecturally speaking, of what a good stereo integrated amplifier should be. Along with the standard analogue inputs for line level devices and a phono input for those still spinning vinyl, a 24bit/192kHz DAC is also built in to accept the digital signals from a TV, CD Player, DVD Player and Computer via an Asynchronous USB port. The from panel is beautiful in it’s simplicity with a lower panel that opens to reveal bass and treble controls as well as balance and speaker selector. A small display shows the selected input making it easy to identify from the couch.
